Homeflex Renovations for Seniors

Q I have heard renovating can be costly, would it be less expensive to move to a Retirement Residence or Assisted Living Facility?
A Moving from one's home can be a stressful experience. Retirement Residences are typically privately owned and operated thus the costs will variy pending on size and style of accomodations, optional care/services required and quality of the residence. The basic cost of a retirement residence is between $2400 - $6000 per month ($29,000 - $72,000 per year) excluding care. For those who wish to live an independent lifestyle in familiar sorroundings and neighbourhood, renovating for accessibility is the most inexpensive and desirable option.

Q I would like to complete a major accessibility renovation, how qualified are you?
A We are not just handymen, we are professional trades with extensive experience managing & completing any size project. We have been managing major renovations including additions and custom projects for over 10 years with Monfils General Contracting (MGC). MGC continues to focus on high end custom projects where we not only manage the project, we work on the project with meticulous attention to detail. It is our finely detailed craftsmanship that continues to satisfy homeowners. With our professionally assembled team of tradesman and professionals such as designers and architects, we can assist you from concept to completion. Visit for more information.

Q I just need a grab bar installed, do you offer a home repair service?
A Absolutely, we offer a home repair or home modification service. Our goal is to support seniors and this may include a simple home modification such as grab bars, ramps, door handles, taps, non slip flooring etc.. The work may take a couple of hours or a comple of days to complete. We can offer a quote for the work or a time/material service. Call us to learn more.

Q How much can I expect to pay for a renovation, repair or modification?
A Depending on the size and scope of the project will determine the cost. For example some may want to pre-plan a new home build with universal and barrier free design. Some may wish to treat themselves with a renovated accessible bathroom with a spa-like design. Some may want something basic with a simple walk in or wheel in shower, non slip flooring, raised toilet and grab bars etc.... Others may just wish to have one peice of the bathroom modified such as a walk in or wheel in shower. The costs for just a walk in shower could range from $2000 - $4000 depending on the size and style of the shower unit you choose.

HomeFlex offers renovations, barrier-free new builds, home modifications and home repairs. We will meet with you to discuss the options, determine your needs/wants and provide you with a recommendation based on your needs and budget. Once we have determined the scope of the work we will quickly provide you with an estimate for major, large or medium projects or we can offer a basic fee for time and materials for smaller projects such as installations of grab bars or small repairs.

Q I am not sure where to start, is there anyone who can give me recommendations?
A Christine has worked with seniors and families for over 16 years. Mathieu and Manual have over 40 years of construction & renovation experience. Together they can assist you in making knowledgable and informed decisions when considering accessible home renovations, barrier free new builds and/or basic home modifications. With our design & build services and experience with accessiblility offerings and trends within the continuum of care, we can provide you with simple, esthetically pleasing or luxurious options to suite your needs and budget.

We can also liase with an qualified Occupational Therapist who can provide an accessibility audit to develop practical design solutions that promote inclusion and functional independence.

For larger projects we can work with qualified Architects, who have experience with universal design and barrier free living.

Q Is there any financial assistance programs available?
A Yes, there are a number of programs available that enable seniors or persons with a disability to stay in their home by renovating. Click here for more resources.

Q Are there any community programs that will help me in my home after I renovate?
A There are many community programs available to seniors. This may include assistance with homemaking, housekeeping, meal preparation, snow removal, transportation services, assistance with activities of daily living, companionship, caregiver relief etc... Some of these services are funded and others may have a fee for service. Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) will be your first stop in determining if you are elegible for funded services or they can provide you with referrals to community based fee-for-service provider. Also Veteran Affairs offers funded home support services to veterans. The City of Ottawa may also provide some assistance in the areas of homemaking services.
